Numark’s seemingly endless mission to add iPod integration to new DJ products has been chuckled at by many a pro DJ in the industry.
However I feel there are a select few products from Numark that actually offer the correct solution to the right DJ. The iDJ2 is one of these exceptions.
Ideally this product aims for any digital DJ but i think it is more suited or preferred by the mobile jock, student or bedroom/house party user.
Imagine, going to a gig or party and only having to take your iPod or external Hard Drive along with your iDJ2 unit instead of hogging a full case of CD’s, mixer, cd decks or laptop. The iDJ2 provides an all-in-one solution for the digital DJ. It can act as a mixer with two stereo inputs so you can actually mix between digital mp3 tracks and Vinyl/CD’s. You can even read and load 2 tracks into either deck from an iPod or HD for simultaneous mixing.
The screen display is extremely easy to use and read and is very intuitive. All the controls have the feel of a regular mixer and even the jog wheels arent too shabby either. Although scratching isn’t as professional with these jog wheels you can still pitch bend and seek quite easily.
Mobile DJ’s wil find this unit a dream to use, you can set up a crate of what to play next (you know – the requests!) which is all seperate to the tracks you load in or your ‘library’ from your hard drive or iPod. A keyboard can be plugged in at the back to help search by typing into the unit for the track your looking for.
The other major point to make is tracks are instantly loaded with no load time once your library has been processed in the past. Plus your audience or clients can provide an iPod of their favourite tracks for you to play through saving you mountains of work preparing those playlists for that wedding gig. Even people with USB sticks can jump on stage and request their favourite track that you may not have simply by plugging it in the USB port on the back and loading it up.
This unit can also be fitted into a custom built Numark iDJ Case which offers a sliding tray for a mini keyboard to rest. Excellent for those on the move who need a rugged flight case for it, it also keeps all cables tidy hiding them behind the unit in the case.
Now what if you have always wanted to be able to mix some tracks off your iPod into your existing DJ set in your bedroom whilst mixing with CD’s or vinyls? Well, bedroom DJ’s can use this unit as a full digital mixer for their more traditional DJ setup connecting turntables or CD decks into it whilst mixing MP3′s off their iPod into their sets too.
