REVIEW: Novation Nio 2/4 Audio Interface

Steven James on October 27, 2008

If your scouring everywhere for a really affordable audio interface strictly to be used for your digital dj setup alongside a dedicated midi controller, then this interface will be the choice for you. It is the most feature packed, high quality mobile interface (USB) with Midi I/O and enough stereo inputs and outputs at the cheapest price.

FOR

  • High quality sound with minimal latency
  • 2 Stereo Outputs with headphone monitoring (split those internal decks out to your external mixers channel 1 & 2 to use your external mixer instead of the software internal mixer)
  • 1 Stereo input (for looping your main output back into the software to record your mix)
  • Small & Portable
  • 2 Headphone Ports (great for working alongside someone as a back to back)
  • Midi I/O (the most affordable DJ interface with Midi ports built in)

AGAINST

  • Lacking one more Stereo Input to use Timecodes (Not really needed if your simply using a midi controller)

PRICE: from only £122.99 [Order from Soundware]

Firstly, Novation just can’t help but deliver strong reliable and high quality audio technology and this interface is no different.  The sound quality is of the highest with minimal latency, headphone monitoring and it features professional grade pre-amps for recording input too.

A lot of digital DJ’s out there don’t actually know what they are looking for when purchasing equipment for their setups. I have had many DJ’s come to me wanting a cheap audio interface with simply 2 stereo outputs then 2 weeks later or a month later they return asking for an additional midi interface or even a brand new interface with headphone monitoring functions.

You see, once you start realising what you can do with digital DJ setups, you realise what you need afterwards. What happens when you get home with your new cheap interface and you find out you can’t mix because there is no headphone monitor or cue feature. Then in the future you realise you need a midi controller to control all those FX, loops, samples, cue points, browser navigation etc but your interface doesn’t have Midi connectivity and you have ran out of USB ports.

Well, the Novation Nio 2/4 is the cheapest solution to all those problems in one. I can’t find a cheaper, high quality audio interface with 2 stereo outs (phono/RCA), 1 stereo in (phonoe/RCA) and Midi ports anywhere in this existance:

£75.00 – Numark DJ IO (No Midi ports and no stereo input for recording)

£122.99 – Novation Nio 2/4 (Has 2 stereo outs, 1 stereo in and Midi Ports – EXCELLENT CHOICE!)

£149.00 – Vestax VAI 40 Interface (No midi ports)

£159.99 – M-Audio Conectiv (No Midi Ports)

£299.99 – NI Audio 8 DJ (The Professional Standard – Has Everything but at a price!)

I have this and I really rate it. It’s very well built, good sound quality, 2 headphone sockets (with separate volumes) and a cracking set of software included (some great FX – including filters etc from the SuperNova – and a version of Novation’s Virtual BassStation). It does seem to draw a lot of power from the USB bus though (my laptop won’t start with it in one of the USB slots – presumably ‘cos it can’t supply enough power to that slot). Also, I think the Nio is actually USB 1.1. rather than USB 2?

Yeh if I remember rightly i think I had issues with it being power hungry but I think that was down to me also running a Behringer BCD2000 as a controller/iterface at the same time and I think it was just too much for my laptop to share the power.

As for the USB, it is 1.1 so i shall correct that, in fact that simply clarifies this as an even better interface pushing all that audio at low latency using only USB 1.1, cheers Dave. I use this interface too in my home studio setup (it’s only a small setup for now).
