With M-Audio’s only latest release being the upgrade to their Torq software (1.5) you would think that their now slightly mature Xponent controller would take a dip in sales. Many of their competitors seem to be releasing fresh controllers on the market every other month now and some people would see these new products as replacements for the Xponent.
Read on for a quick honest review…
But, truth be told, the Xponent has been selling more than ever and is still as popular now as they were when first released. I guess this could be down to th fact that M-Audio have developed this controller to be future proof at least by a couple of years in digital DJ standards. You will probably see it still hanging around for sale the back end of this year.
The reason for this can be backed up by the controls it offers and the size that it is. Most DJ’s prefer a lot of space and larger controls to work with instead of little fiddly knobs or wheels and faders so tightly squeezed together you can often accidentally knock them. The Xponent does not enter that category. It has lots of space and is the best controller for those with really fat thumbs and fingers.
The Jog Wheels are probably the biggest wheels I have seen offered on a controller and would be one of the more attractive features of it. Yes the grips on the jogs could be better as when you try and scratch with them you do find you need to push down a lot harder to get a grip. But if your just looking to seek through a track, set a cue point or pitch bend with them, then the size of them certainly helps.
The pitch faders are certainly a breath of fresh air compared to other controllers out there. They are long, and I mean turntable sized length. Most controllers out there simply just fit in a pitch slider where they can in the smallest amount of space which doesn’t help in finding that sweet spot at even the highest resolution. But the Xponent offers both, high resolution and a lengthy fader allowing you to ride the pitch smoothly and tightly.
Apart from the fact it incorporates a mouse trackpad and two mouse buttons which in my mind should be a simple pair of endless rotary knobs and a couple of buttons for navigation instead, the Xponent does have nice buttons to touch and the size and space it offers certainly keeps it up their in popularity with digital DJ’s.
